Agreeing the crucial view
Martyn gave me clear instructions as to what they would both like. It would be a scene of Bermondsey Street, taken from outside their former home.
So I set about photographing various angles that would capture the scene. Having met Jennifer on one occasion I was excited to be given the job of paintings something so special for the both of them. Martyn talked over the various angles after I took some initial photos and agreed on the final composition and costumes.

So you’ve been asked to paint a scene.
Occasionally I’m approached to undertake commission paintings. My most recent instruction was from a lovely gentleman who lived locally and wanted to celebrate his girlfriends birthday. They had lived on Bermondsey Street and were moving out of the area.
If your not familiar with the immediate area, it has a village feel and attracts a lot of young professionals thanks to a wide variety of eateries and high class restaurants. I should also mention its a beacon for tourists with the White Cube gallery, FTM to name a few of the attractions.
Final unveiling
Being given the responsibility of painting a commission scene is a daunting job. One has ones own style and a client will always have there own ideas too. Merging those expectations and aspirations is always nerve racking. Martyn was exceptionally supportive and even on the day of presenting the painting ones own heart stops as you want to exceed any expectations.
I’ve enclosed some photos throughout this blog taking you through the process. I’m pleased to say that Jennifer was very pleased with the surprise gift. I hope that this painting brings them both a lot of joy over the years. What follows is Martyn and Jennifer’s customer review:
